Guzheng Setup & Gear

1. Stand Placement

Place the two stands correctly to ensure maximum stability.

  • The Larger Stand: Place under the “head” (right side). There are multiple grooves under the head of the guzheng; ensure the tall stand is nested in the farthest right groove (at the very end) for stability.
  • The Smaller Stand: Place under the “tail” (left side). Make sure the stand does not cover the sound hole to allow for proper resonance.

2. Bridge Placement

Correct bridge positioning is essential for the instrument’s scale and string tension.

  • Organize: Line up the bridges from 1 to 21. Bridge #1 is the smallest (for the thinnest string), and Bridge #21 is the largest (for the thickest string).
  • Preparation: Loosen the strings enough so you can gently lift them to slide a bridge underneath.
  • Placement:
    • Bridge #1: Approximately 15–16 cm from the right fixed bridge (about one adult hand-length).
    • Spacing: Bridges should be spaced roughly 1.5 cm to 2 cm apart at the top, but the gap will naturally widen.
    • Bridge #21: Approximately 85–90 cm from the right fixed bridge.
  • Alignment: Ensure each string sits securely in the notch on top of its bridge.

3. Tuning

Once all bridges are in place, use your tuning wrench for major adjustments and bridge movement for fine-tuning.

  • Tuning to D Major Scale: The guzheng uses a pentatonic scale (1,2,3,5,6). In the key of D, these notes are: 1=D, 2=E, 3=F#, 5=A, 6=B.
    • Note: All green strings are the note 5 (A).
  • App Recommendation: Pano Tuner.
  • How to Adjust Pitch:
    • To Raise Pitch (Sharp): Turn the tuning wrench clockwise to tighten the string, OR slide the bridge to the right.
    • To Lower Pitch (Flat): Turn the tuning wrench counter-clockwise to loosen the string, OR slide the bridge to the left.

Pro-Tip: Unless a note is significantly out of tune, try sliding the bridge a few millimeters first. It is safer and more precise than using the wrench for tiny adjustments.

4. Nails & Tape

Wearing picks (nails) allows you to produce a clear, resonant guzheng tone.

  • Selection: Most players wear four nails on the right hand. Professional-grade tortoise shell or high-quality resin nails generally provide the best sound quality.
  • Placement: Position the nail on the inner side of your fingertip. It should extend approximately 5mm past your natural fingernail, ensuring it does not obstruct your finger joint.
  • Taping: Use specialized breathable cotton tape. When wrapping, aim for a balance between security and circulation—the tape should be tight enough to prevent the nail from wobbling, but loose enough to maintain healthy blood flow.

5. Metronome

A metronome is essential for developing steady rhythm and precision during practice.

  • App Recommendation: Pro Metronome.

6. Recommended Gear

The following is the gear I personally use and recommend. Using these affiliate links helps support my teaching at no extra cost to you.

  • D’Addario Clip-on Tuner (Click here to view): Clips directly onto the instrument to pick up vibrations, making it much easier to tune in noisy environments compared to phone apps.
  • Gleam Music Stand (Click here to view): I recommend a low and flat stand. This ensures your hand movements remain visible to the audience during performances.
