Boost Efficiency with SMART Practice 透過SMART練習提升效率🎯🎵

“It’s not how smart you are. It’s how you are smart.” – Jeanne Anne Craig

Do you want to practice music efficiently and avoid mistakes? The key is to improve the quality of your practice, which leads to better results. Here are my SMART strategies to help you build an efficient and mindful practice routine.

Start Slow 🐢

Play slowly to learn faster. This is one of the phrases I often tell beginner players. The concept may sound counterintuitive, but once you start implementing it, you’ll realize it saves you time by preventing mistakes and avoiding the need to relearn material. Remember, mistakes are unavoidable but can be reduced by practicing slowly.
✅ Action Plan: When you start playing a new piece, use a speed that is slow enough for you to play fluently and identify mistakes.

Make a Plan 🗺️

A practice plan serves as a map during your practice sessions. It’s better to start small. Divide a piece into several short sections, practice them piece by piece, and gradually put them together.
✅ Action Plan: Start by practicing two (or four) measures repeatedly. After achieving basic fluency, connect the sections to form longer parts and eventually the entire piece.

Always Listen 👂

One common mistake I observe in beginners is treating music practice as finger exercises while forgetting that music is an art of listening. As a result, their practice may improve technical ability but does not always enhance the quality of their musical expression.
✅ Action Plan: Focus on different elements each time—such as tone, dynamics, and phrasing. Identify areas where your musical expression can improve and adjust your playing accordingly.

Reflect 🔍

Effective music practice is a mindful process that requires deliberate effort to observe yourself. Consider musical, physical, and psychological factors during your reflection.
✅ Action Plan: After each practice session, ask yourself: What did I do well? What areas can I improve? What steps can I take to make progress?

Take Your Time ⏳

Playing music is about building a relationship with your instrument. Like any relationship, it takes time and patience. Rushing the process can be counterproductive, so take your time and enjoy the journey.
✅ Action Plan: Set a weekly practice goal. Start with a comfortable goal or duration and increase it gradually. Most importantly, enjoy the process.

The quality of your practice determines the quality of your music. Implement these SMART strategies in your practice and let me know how they work for you. Have a SMART practice!

— Jeanne Anne Craig

Start Slow

Make a Plan

Always Listen

Reflect

Take Your Time 給自己時間
